First place, image of the month April: Self control, by Peter Brandt

Sharp Focus May 2022

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Greetings, everyone

There are two words that strike fear in the shy, uninitiated, and inexperienced photographer, and those are ‘Street Photography’. I must admit I was nervous – but Ceridwyn was terrified.

What is it about Street Photography that is so nerve wracking? Is it the idea of invading someone else’s space, privacy? Is it just the uncertainty of the whole process? Or is it the likelihood of upsetting someone, getting sworn at, or even punched in the face? Whatever, it’s a daunting experience.

Yet, when we meet on Monday 2nd May at Kalk Bay, all those who attended had a very enjoyable and entertaining time. After a brief introduction by Peter as to what to look out for, and how to approach people, we set out hoping not to get sworn at or worse. And what a great time it was – I didn’t get sworn at once! I think all of us found the people most willing to have their photo taken, and some even went out of their way to be helpful. I only found one person who didn’t want to be photographed and deliberately turned away.

For me personally I found it was an eye opening experience – not at all the intimidating event I had expected it to be. After an hour of being let loose on the poor unsuspecting citizens of Kalk Bay we gathered together again, and from all the excited chatter that took place over coffee I know everyone else felt the same. Even Ceridwyn was smiling.  I’m sure I’m not speaking only for myself when I say we must do this again soon.

Kind regards

Geoff

From the editor’s desk

Sadly, I wasn’t able to attend the street photography session in Kalk Bay, but from what I’ve heard and the images I’ve seen  it was a wonderful outing with the people there only too happy to help and be featured. A few of the pictures taken there are shown below; they are inspiring me not to miss another outing! But this I need to share with you – a real human interest story! Abraham’s story is one of persistence. Evelyn took his photo five years ago on the day of the Nifty Fifty challenge. She lost his contact number and saw him a few weeks ago in Kalk Bay and gave him his photo – he heard our club was coming and he dressed up specially for us! Thank you, Abraham.
