FROM THE CHAIR
February 2025
Although we had to make the tough call to cancel February’s club meeting, we didn’t let that stop us from staying connected! With only a few attendees available and limited technical support, it wasn’t practical to go ahead, but we made sure to keep everyone in the loop. Announcements and the image ratings list were shared via WhatsApp, followed by the images on Flickr—an unusual approach for us, but a great way to keep things moving!
It’s clear how much our gatherings mean to everyone, as shown by the great participation in this month’s multi-exposures workshop and outing. Thanks Johan Kloppers for leading this. Let’s keep up the momentum! We can’t wait to see a full house next month when we kick things off early with Jane Bursey’s talk on Salon rules and star rating advancement. Plus, we have a special treat—Lynn Toms will be visiting while on holiday in South Africa!
Looking forward to an inspiring and engaging evening with all of you. See you there!
Warm regards,
Betzi

Themes – changes to the program
Please can everyone take note the Themes program has been revised and the theme for March is Negative Space. Submissions due by midnight Monday 17th March. This allows for Nightscapes to move to July. Click here to view our themes and outings for 2025.
Negative Space – Theme for March
Since negative space is inherently present in every medium and genre of art, artists across all disciplines are able to take advantage of its great potential. Traditionally, the compositional tool has been most widely used by artists producing drawings or paintings, as paper and canvas are prime surfaces for working with negative space. Sculptors have also dabbled in the practice, since creatively playing with space is particularly important to three-dimensional pieces.
Negative space photography emphasises not just the subject but also the empty space around the subject. So, although the viewer’s eyes may focus on a central figure, they can’t help but notice the large section of emptiness that surrounds and defines that figure. Google Negative Space for more in-depth examples, I particularly liked the photographers on the Adobe website giving their interpretation and approach to the theme.

Waiting for your contributions – prints and inspiration
We are hoping to organise an exhibition of the work of FHPS photographers in the near future and due to the high cost of printing it would be great if you could loan any prints, or canvases, that you may have for the promotion. Just call me and I’ll collect or bring them along to one of our meetings. No rush.
Besides sharing our wonderful, and sometimes challenging, images we also have experiences along the way that could be shared to the greater good of the club members. I’m thinking of the photoshop lesson by that well known photographer – the freebee at Orms – the soooo expensive photo safari. If you are no good at writing you can also offer to present prior to our monthly meeting!
Thanks for reading,
Margaret
