Image of the Month 1st place: Crab for lunch, by Didi Franklin

Sharp Focus March 2022

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Greetings, everyone

Something that I find both fundamental and interesting about photography is the different interpretations each one of us brings to any given subject. Fortunately we are all different – with different backgrounds, different experiences, and different points of view – and these differences make for a wonderful variety of photos.

A case in point was the outing to the car museum in February. Not only was it successful in the number of people that participated, but also for the photos that were submitted for judging. Whether it was cracked paint, or rust streaks, or a combination of both, or views through broken windows, every photo had a different story, and brought with it something of the photographer.

For me outings are important, not only for the photographs taken but also for the camaraderie that they create. They are especially important during this time when we are forced to meet over Zoom. It was therefore a pity that the outing to Boulders and the penguins fell through, as I’m sure it too would have produced some outstanding photos. I want to urge all of you to please make every effort to attend the outings that have been arranged so that we can learn from one another, and encourage each other in this hobby that we enjoy so much.

I want to thank all those who stepped in while I was laid up with Covid. A big thank you to Peter for taking over, chairing the committee meetings and promoting the outings. We all wish him well as he now recovers from Covid, and hope that there will be no long-term after effects.

This month’s theme is Nature and I am looking forward to some stunning photos.

Geoff

Tail wagging the dog

I’ve been dying to share this image with you all – often I talk in the mono workshops about the kind of images you shouldn’t automatically convert to black and white… somewhat counter-intuitively these are images of black-and-white things like the Boulders penguins, zebras and yes, dalmatians, where the subtlest bit of colour is unexpected and enlivening.

Click on the puppies above in order to enlarge, and simply marvel at the delicate loveliness of those dustings of pink on the snouts and pads … while the image would have been very effective as a mono, I believe the hint of colour here takes it to the next level.

Let us know your thoughts!
Peter
