Sharp Focus July 2024

MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN

August 2024

Hi all

Every genre of photography has its challenges and Macro/Close up photography is no different, as those who attended our Macro workshop on Saturday, 6th July found out. For me lighting is a major challenge when working at such close distances because very little light can get to the subject, and often necessitates precise control over the direction, intensity, and quality of the light.

assembling his macro setup so that those attending could see the high level of detail and sharpness that can be achieved.

Geoff

FROM YOUR EDITOR’S DESK

Forgive me please, all you lovely people – I had a wonderful June holiday in Gauteng with family who are more than precious to Errol and me.

Maureen

CONGRATULATIONS

It’s a great pleasure for all at our club to congratulate three members on their achievements in June this year.

JUDGE’S CORNER

Not quite sure why, but some of us tend to take a holiday in the Cape winter months, and Peter is one who is called loudly and clearly to the East – leading the trip was Bali, and then on to several other beautiful surfing spots. He’ll be back with us next month, hopefully.

Questions and answers

I saw an interesting question on one of my feeds a couple of days ago, and thought it would be a good idea to have a Q&A section in Sharp Focus. Questions could deal with technical/camera issues, where and how’s, or anything that you’re battling with and can’t solve. Plese note, though, that we can deal with only one question each month, so if you have anything to ask, please send it over to me as soon as you can.

I’ll start with the first one received a short while ago, and I will keep the author anonymous.

Q:   May I ask you to recall a comment you made about the still life in the pic. I think you mentioned it not having a base, or it looks like it’s floating, but I think you called it something specific?

A:    Typically with a still life against a black background you want a bit of light to fall on the surface it is sitting on, but I mentione that as an isolated item, shot straight on (ie no perspective shifts or atmospherics brought on by shallow DOF). It can also function as a typological photograph, where the base is not necessary. The one area where a photograph moves away from a “dead pan” typology towards still life, however, is the rapid fall-off of light, which does have an atmospheric quality, and so in that sense would benefit from the platform being lit slightly.   For more, read at https://fraenkelgallery.com/portfolios/bernd-and-hilla-becher-typologies.
